White Funnel Magic

This lavishly illustrated account of the passenger steamer services of P & A Campbell's White Funnel steamers is the result of a lifetime of cruising the Bristol Channel. It is based on practical experience coupled with copious research into the Bristol Channel and its maritime history.

From the earliest days to the halcyon inter-war years, the paddlers, people and places of the White Funnel fleet are brought to life with evocative photographs and knowledgeable text. For the first time the company's South Coast services are recounted together with pictorial accounts of their French excursions and the Fleet review of 1953. Many readers will delight in "the days we remember best" - a chapter covering Bristol Channel services between 1947 and 1960, recalling the era of the Bristol Queen and the Cardiff Queen.

The author, Nigel Coombes, has interviewed former crew members of staff of P & A Campbell, long-time excursionists and fellow maritime historians to produce a unique social and maritime study of the White Funnel steamers. He has also amassed over 200 photographs, many depicting very rare scenes and few of which have appeared in print before.

Nigel's first book for Twelveheads Press was Passenger Steamers of the Bristol Channel, published in 1990. It sold out very rapidly and reviewers described it as "one of the very best books for many years" and "a work of pure magic". White Funnel Magic is a worthy successor and has proved equally as popular.
