Mines of Cornwall & Devon cover

Mines of Cornwall & Devon
an historic photographic record

by Peter Stanier

The present landscape of Cornwall and, to a lesser degree, Devon leaves little doubt that the south west of England was once a major metal mining region. The roofless engine houses of today are but ghosts of an industrious past and this further selection from the historic photographic collections of the British Geological Survey brings those ghosts to life.

Mines large and small, long lasting and transient, are shown as they were working, on surface and below ground. The techniques, machinery and processes are illustrated and described, and in some instances the decline is recorded also. The Survey photographers ranged from the wild Atlantic cliffs of Cornwall to the eastern flanks of Dartmoor creating a meticulously detailed record which is now of great historic value.

Reviews:

... beautifully produced by Twelveheads Press who never skimp on quality ... It is [the author's] own sense of a good picture that prevents Mines from becoming just another mining book and perhaps makes him the ideal writer to document this unique archive. St Ives Times & Echo

... lost myself for several hours in the pages of this terrific book ... West Briton
