Tamar Steamers cover

Steamers & Ferries of the River Tamar
& Three Towns District

by Alan Kittridge

For at least 100 years until the 1950s the waterside communities of the Three Towns district, that became the City of Plymouth, were dependent upon steamer and ferry services for work and play. The waterways were once crowded with ferry and steamer services, serving the five rivers and numerous creeks of the River Tamar and Plymouth district - 16 ferries, 35 steamers and over 40 landing places by 1900.

This book is the culmination of many years research into official records, conversations with former crewmen and shared interest with other historians and photographers. The result is a definitive history with 250 illustrations, including some rarely seen photographs. It is a worthy successor to the author's Passenger Steamers of the River Tamar, published in 1984 and long out of print.

It is a high quality hardback book, that recalls those much loved ferry and excursion steamers (and some not so fondly remembered), their personnel and the communities they served. They were vital and familiar to those who lived near the water highways of the Three Towns district.

This is a superb piece of work, which should find favour with many general transport enthusiasts and those interested in this most picturesque region, as well as with the maritime and river shipping fraternity . . . heartily recommended. Archive
